KL Rahul returned to action after winning the toss and asked Zimbabwe to bat in the opening ODI at Harare. Rahul admitted that he didn’t know “what to expect from this pitch”, but wanted his bowlers to start early and use the moisture, especially in the first hour.

Deepak Chahar also made a comeback after a long injury and India included both Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson in the XI. Rahul did not say in the toss who would open for India or in which position he would bat.

As expected, the pace attack included Deepak Chahar, Prashant Krishna and Mohammad Siraj, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel were the spin options. Deepak Hooda will be India’s sixth bowling option as an off-spinner. Rahul said Indian players who were traveling with the team but haven’t had the chance recently can use the series to “enjoy some time in between”.

Zimbabwe captain Regis Chakabwa also wanted to win the toss and bowl, but said his openers would now have “first hour talks”.

And he decided to open this time with Innocent Kaya with Tadiwanashe Marumani, leaving Takudzwanshe Kaitano. But they were encouraged by the return of veteran Sean Williams.
