Prabhat Jayasuriya: SL Bowler Broke 71-Year-Old Record To Become World’s Number-1 Spinner. Sri Lankan spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya created history in the second Test being played between Sri Lanka and Ireland.

In the Test being played in Galle, two Sri Lankan batsmen created history by scoring doubles and two centuries, while bowler Prabhat Jayasuriya also took the world record in his name with his brilliant bowling.

Taking just 2 wickets in the second innings, Prabhat Jayasuriya became the fastest spinner in the world to take 50 Test wickets. He achieved this feat in his 7th Test.

Broke 71 years old record

Jayasuriya took 5 for 174 in the first innings of the second Test in Sri Lanka. By the first innings of his 7th Test, he had taken 48 wickets.

He became the world’s number-1 spinner by taking two more wickets in the second innings. Jayasuriya broke the 71-year-old record held by West Indian left-arm spinner Alf Valentine.

Valentine made this record on 31 December 1951. Was the top spinner with 50 wickets in 8 Tests, but Jayasuriya broke his record in his 7th Test.

Third bowler to take 50 wickets in 7 matches:-

Prabhat Jayasuriya also became the third bowler to take 50 wickets in just 7 matches. Earlier, South African fast bowler Vernon Philander and England bowler Tom Richardson reached the 50-wicket mark in their seventh match.

Now Prabhat Jayasuriya’s name has also been included in this list. Philander took 50 wickets in his 7th Test after making his debut in November 2011.

While Richardson also took 50 wickets in 7 Tests, it took him nearly three years after his debut in 1896 to achieve the feat. Although then matches were playing very rarely.

The record is registered in the name of Charlie Turner:-

The record for the fastest 50 wickets in Test cricket is recorded in the name of Australian fast bowler Charlie Turner. He set the record for taking 50 Test wickets in his sixth Test match against England in 1888.
