Bangladesh will regret leaving Mathews on 69, but for Sri Lanka’s batsmen, it was an otherwise tough competition against stagnant home spinners.

When he was on 69, Mahmudul Hasan Joy dropped Mathews at slip in the 65th over off Taijul, and although Mahmudul made a good catch to dismiss Dhananjay de Silva in the next over, it was a costly one. Drop proved.

Sri Lanka started the third season on a poor note when Mendis pulled a long-hop off Taijul to Nayeem at short midwicket. Mathews and Mendis kept wickets in the second session during the long haul.

Mendis batted fairly conservatively, hitting only a few cover drives and another boundary through midwicket, as he allowed Mathews to flourish. He came late in the first session after Nayeem took two wickets.

The offspinner, playing his first Test in over a year, dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne in his first over before dismissing Oshada Fernando. However, Bangladesh lost two of its reviews with the usual lbw appeal.
