Fast bowler Wahab Riaz has been named as the caretaker sports minister of Punjab. Wahab, who is currently playing for Khulna Tigers in the Bangladesh Premier League, will take the oath of office upon his return home.

There is no official word on what this means for his involvement with the Pakistan Super League, although he is almost certain to take a full part in it.

Wahab plays for Peshawar Zalmi

Wahab plays for Peshawar Zalmi till this year. Riaz captained the team before Babar Azam became the 2017 champions. He was retained in the Diamond category by Zalmi, which was a downgrade from their previous platinum status.

He is the all-time leading wicket-taker in PSL with 103, and Hasan Ali is second with 81. The 37-year-old Wahab last played international cricket for Pakistan in 2020. Having featured in 27 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20Is, taking 237 wickets across formats.

His appointment was notified by Punjab’s caretaker chief minister Mohsin Naqvi. And he will continue in the post till the time Punjab hosts the provincial elections, likely in April.

The Caretaker Government oversees the elections, and the ministers who hold Caretaker positions are appointed rather than elected. Wahab does not have much political affiliation or administrative experience, although his late father-in-law and Naqvi were prominent members of Lahore’s business community.
