In a conversation with PTI, Dhumal talked about his long-term plans for the IPL. The IPL sold media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle for Rs 48,390 crore, making it the world’s second most valuable sports league in terms of value per match. There is a plan to organize 94 matches between 10 teams in the IPL in two and a half months.

Dhumal said moving ahead with new plans is the need of the hour and there is no reason why IPL cannot become the biggest league in the world.

IPL will be bigger than what it is now:-

Asked what are the plans of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to go ahead with the IPL, Dhumal said, “IPL will be much bigger than what it is now and it will become the number one sports league in the world.”

He said, “We definitely plan not to add things to it so that it can be more fan-friendly. We want to give a better experience to those who watch it on TV and those who come and watch it in the stadium.”

Dhumal said, “If we prepare the IPL schedule well in advance, then fans from all over the world can make their itinerary accordingly.” Dhumal said that there is no possibility of adding more teams to it.

He said, “The number of teams will remain at 10. If their number is increased then it will become difficult to organize the tournament together.

We are looking at hosting 74 matches in the first two seasons and then 84 matches and if things go well then 94 matches can be organized in the fifth year.

It will be difficult to organize tournaments:-

“We cannot compare ourselves with football or other sports leagues in the world because the requirements of cricket are completely different. You can’t play on the same pitch for six months.”

With the way T20 leagues are starting across the world, there is increasing pressure on BCCI to allow its players to play in foreign leagues.

IPL owners have bought all six teams of the new South African league. And it is natural that they want Indian players to be present in these teams.

But Dhumal clarified that BCCI has no intention of allowing its players to play in foreign leagues.

“In principle, it is the BCCI’s decision that our contracted players cannot play in other leagues. This decision has been taken for their well-being and we stand by it now. Even non-contracted players are keen to play for India.
