England’s Sophie Ecclestone will debut with Sydney Sixers during WBBL08, Number one ranked T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone on Tuesday (September 13) will sign her Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) with Sydney Sixers after signing for the eighth edition of the competition on Tuesday (September 13).
The 23-year-old has taken 78 wickets in 59 matches at an average of 16.57 and an economy rate of 6.00. She is currently playing a three-match T20I series against India at home.

Although she has played in The Hundred and Women’s T20 Challenge, this will be the first time Ecclestone will compete in a T20 league in Australia.
“They play my favorite color – so it’s a great start. Obviously, they have great players like Healy (Alyssa Healy), Perry (Elyse Perry), and Gardner (Ashley Gardner). So I really want to play with them. And looking forward to playing,” said Ecclestone.
“It would be nice not to bowl at him… It’s nice that he’ll be on my team once! I’m excited to know him and start training with him and playing on the same team.”
The Sixers’ newly appointed coach for the season, Charlotte Edwards, expressed happiness in signing the left-arm spinner and said his experience playing in Australia would come in handy during the tournament.
“Sophie is the leading T20 bowler – her record over the years speaks for itself – and we are happy to have her at the Sixers. In my opinion, we have recruited the best,” Edwards said.
“She can bowl at all stages of the game; She has the ability to pick up wickets at crucial times, and she can take down the run-scoring at all times.
I know the WBBL is a competition Sophie wants to play in, and the fact that she has a lot of experience playing in Australia will put her in a good position.
Ecclestone, who made his international debut in 2016, has previously played as part of England’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia and the Ashes team earlier this year.
Ecclestone said she has wanted to join the WBBL for a long time and is excited to finally get the chance.
“It’s been a long time coming,” she said about playing in the WBBL. “I’ve been meaning to leave for a few years now. I’m so excited that, this year, it’s working out well and I can get there.
I’ve seen a lot in it. Some girls from England have been finishers in the past and have liked the competition. I hope I enjoy myself,” Ecclestone said.
“It’s good that Edwards supports my batting as well as my bowling. Hopefully, I can contribute as an all-rounder.”
Ecclestone is the Sixers’ first overseas signing, although they have three Australia-contracted players in Healy, Perry, and Gardner.
They will begin their WBBL08 campaign with the opening match of the competition against Brisbane Heat.
