According to former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, Prithvi Shaw could be India’s captaincy candidate in future. Gambhir also picked Hardik Pandya. Pandya has already led India in T20Is, as India’s future captain, but Shaw was a more left-field option as he has not played for India since July 2021.

Hardik Pandya has been touted as a possible successor to Rohit Sharma

After India’s semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup last month. Hardik Pandya has been touted as a possible successor to Rohit Sharma, at least in T20Is. With time, he has also gained some captaincy experience. In May, he captained Gujarat Titans to the IPL title for the first time. Then led India for the first time in T20Is on the tour of Ireland to a 2–0 series win. Recently, he led India to a 1-0 series win in T20Is in New Zealand in the absence of senior players like Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Shaw, the second choice, has also struggled to find a regular place in India’s second string team over the past year. Gambhir did not specify in which format he sees Shaw as a potential captaincy candidate. Throughout his short career, Shaw has suffered from more than just lack of form. Ever since he was suspended for a doping violation in 2019, his fitness and lifestyle issues are under scrutiny.

Gambhir said at an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Sunday

“Hardik Pandya is clearly in line. But it’s going to be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in only one ICC event is probably not the right way to judge him.”

In March this year, there was news of Shaw failing the yo-yo test. His score of under 15 was a far cry from the BCCI prescribed minimum score of 16.5 for men.
