IND vs PAK: Former Australia captain wants to change the rules of free hit, said this

IND vs PAK, T20 World Cup 2022: Former Australia captain Mark Taylor says that some rules of the game should be tweaked after the so-called controversial finish of the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match in Melbourne.

India won on the last ball of the 20th over. India won the match by 4 wickets, but Mohammad Nawaz had a free hit in the same over, on which Virat Kohli was clean bowled, but he managed to run 3 runs as a bye. For this, Mark Taylor wants the rules to be changed.

In the last over of the match, the run was taken on a free hit like this :-

When India needed 5 runs in 3 balls to win, Virat Kohli was bowled on a free hit. But the ball went in the direction of third man, where Virat along with Dinesh Karthik ran for three runs. According to the rules, Team India should have got 3 runs, which they also got.

Although the captain of the Pakistan team and the rest of the players protested, the field umpire stuck to his decision, as it was not against the ICC rules that India should not be awarded runs.

IND vs PAK: According to ICC Rule 20.1, it is valid to take runs like this:-

According to ICC Law 20.1, the ball is dead when it “ends into the hands of the wicketkeeper or bowler” or “a boundary is reached” or “a batsman is out.”

However, the batsman can neither be bowled nor caught on a free hit. In such a situation, the ball would not be dead after hitting the stumps. Runs could be taken and the Indian team had full rights for this.

Mark Taylor said this on Wide World of Sports :-

On this whole matter, Mark Taylor said on Wide World of Sports that the batting team should not take advantage of such a scenario which usually leads to a dismissal. “I think if the ball hits the stumps you are really getting an unfair advantage.

Firstly, as we saw on Sunday night, the ball can go anywhere. Secondly, if the fielding team is trying to run out the batsman and the bails are already on the ground and you are on the stumps. If it has to be removed, it is also difficult.”

Mark Taylor wants this change :-

Mark Taylor continued, “I think if the batsman gets bowled or gets caught on a free hit. You are not out, but should the ball be dead at that point, it would be fair and reasonable.

You’ve got the advantage of not getting out on a free hit. But you shouldn’t take advantage of what would normally be considered a dismissal a second time.”
