Lasith Malinga, Mumbai Indians: Former Mumbai Indians fast bowler Lasith Malinga is all set to return to the franchise before IPL 2024. However, the right-arm pacer will now join the Rohit Sharma-led side in a different role.

According to media reports, Malinga can become the fast bowling coach of Mumbai Indians. If that happens, the former Sri Lankan fast bowler will replace New Zealand’s Shane Bond, who has been the fast bowling coach of the franchise for the last nine years. After retiring from IPL, Malinga became part of the coaching setup of Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2021 and was the bowling coach there for two seasons. However, now his return to Mumbai is believed to be certain. It is yet to be officially confirmed.

IPL 2024: Leaving Royals, Lasith Malinga can become Mumbai Indians’ pace bowling coach.

However, according to news agency PTI, Mumbai Indians have not yet taken a definite decision on the tenure of the current bowling coach of the team, Shane Bond. Bond was appointed bowling coach at MI in 2015 and naturally worked with Malinga during his years playing with the franchise. MI’s contract with Bond is still not over, a source told PTI.

Fast bowlers of Mumbai Indians will be of great benefit :-

After retiring from cricket in 2021, Malinga took over as the fast bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals in 2022. In 2022, the Rajasthan team reached the finals. However, in this year’s campaign the team could not even reach the playoffs and finished the season in fifth place. If Malinga becomes Mumbai’s bowling coach, it will be a big deal for bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. Apart from this, bowlers like Akash Madhwal and Arjun Tendulkar will also get a lot of help.

Mumbai Indians: Lasith Malinga’s IPL career :-

Playing for the Mumbai Indians team, Lasith Malinga won five titles, including four IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) and the 2011 Champions League T20 win. Malinga’s association with Mumbai Indians lasted for 139 matches. During this he took 195 wickets at an economy rate of 7.12. In 2018, Malinga was appointed Mumbai’s mentor. This will be Malinga’s second stint as Mumbai’s support staff.
