Mahela Jayawardene: Joe Root, the former captain of the England Test team, is currently in excellent form. His bat has scored 927 runs in the longest format of cricket this year, becoming the highest run-getter in the current edition of the ICC Test Championship. This is the reason why Root is currently ranked first in the Test rankings, winning the ICC Test Player of the Year award in 2021.

Now former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has named the batsman who can overtake Root to take the first position in the Test rankings in the coming times. Mahela Jayawardene said on the show of ‘ICC Review’, ‘It’s tough! I would say Babar Azam has an opportunity. He is consistently doing well in all three formats and it shows in his ranking.

Mahela Jayawardene said, “This player will snatch the No. 1 crown from Joe Root”

He is a naturally talented player, plays in all conditions, he also has the ability to adapt the game. It depends on the number of cricket matches, who is playing when and how much. But Babar could be that person.

Babar Azam is the only player who is in top 3 in all three formats :-

Babar Azam is the only player in world cricket who is in the top three of the ICC rankings for all three formats. Azam is at number one in T20 and ODI. While in Tests he is at number three behind Joe Root and Marnus Labuschagne.

Jayawardene said, “It is difficult to survive in T20 and one-day internationals because there are many good players who play consistently well. He can do this for a long time as there are many batsmen to play around him in the Pakistan setup. It allows him to play his game. He has to stick to it and at the same time push himself to be irresistible.
