Mitchell Johnson on David Warner: David Warner has been selected in the 14-member Test team, which will play the first Test match. He will definitely be selected in the best eleven. However, former fast bowler Mitchell Johnson is not happy with this. In his column for The West Australia on Sunday, Johnson has raised questions about why David Warner, who was part of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal and poor form, is being given a hero’s farewell. In the last two years, his average in Test cricket is less than 27, even though he has played 36 Test innings. Only a few big innings have come from his bat.
Mitchell Johnson wrote, “It’s been five years and David Warner still hasn’t found out the truth about the ball-tampering scandal. The way he is bidding farewell now is based on the same arrogance and disrespect towards our country. As we prepare for David Warner’s farewell series, can anyone tell me why? Why was a struggling Test opener allowed to nominate his retirement date and become part of one of the biggest scandals in Australian cricket history? Why should the player who was at the center of the match be given a hero’s farewell?”

He further wrote, “Warner is certainly not Australia’s Test captain and for that matter never deserved one. In fact he finished his career under a lifetime leadership ban. Yes, his overall record is good and some would say He is one of our greatest opening batsmen, but his last three years in Test cricket have been ordinary, his batting average so poor that a tailender would be happy.”
Johnson further says that this is a disgrace of ball tampering in South Africa, which many will never forget. However, Warner was not alone in Sandpapergate, he was a senior member of the team at the time and was someone who liked to use his perceived power as a ‘leader’.
Mitchell Johnson further asks, “Does it really warrant a hero’s retirement for a player whose last series against Pakistan was predicted a year ago as if he would be as good as the game and the Australian cricket team? Grow up? Granted, he scored his double century against South Africa at the MCG last summer, but those were the only big scores he had made in years. He had yet to reach 50 in 17 Test innings before this year’s Ashes series. I was successful only once.”
