ODI World Cup 2023: The 1996 World Cup champion and the 2007 and 2011 runner-up Sri Lankan team has suffered a major setback in view of the ODI World Cup 2023. The team had recently lost the ticket for the final of the WTC (World Test Championship) and now the ticket for the World Cup has also gone out of the hands of the team. After losing the Test series 2-0 on the current tour of New Zealand, the Asian team has also lost 2-0 against New Zealand in the ODI series. The second ODI of the series was abandoned due to rain. In the third match, the Sri Lankan team had to face defeat by 6 wickets. Due to this defeat, the team has not only lost the series but has also lost the ticket for the ODI World Cup to be held in India.

Talking about this match, the Sri Lankan team playing first was reduced to just 157 runs in 41.3 overs. Matt Henry, Darryl Mitchell and Shipley had 3-3 successes. That means the Asian champion will now have to play the qualifier round. It will happen after 44 years in the history of ODI World Cup that the Sri Lankan team will play in the qualifiers for the ODI World Cup. Earlier in the 1979 World Cup, Sri Lanka had to play qualifiers. However, this happened recently in T20 World Cup history when West Indies and Sri Lanka played qualifiers before the tournament in 2022.
