Zimbabwe won the second match of the three-match ODI series against the Netherlands by just 1 run to level the series 1-1. The match reached an exciting turn, with the home team snatching victory from the jaws of the Dutch team. The biggest contribution in this was from Zimbabwe’s star all-rounder Wesley Medhevre, who gave a great start with the first bat while opening. After that, by taking a hat-trick with the ball, he made a record which had never happened before.

Chasing the target of 272 runs in this match, the Netherlands team was moving towards winning this match. The team needed 59 runs in the last 7 overs and had seven wickets in hand. From here the dice was turned by Wesley Medhevre who had the ball in hand for the 44th over. Medhevre did this on the first three balls of the over itself that the Netherlands team came on the backfoot. He first stumped Ackermann, then bowled Nidamunuru and completed the hat-trick by clean-bowling Van Meekeren on the last ball. Medhevre took three wickets for 36 runs in nine overs.

Third hat-trick for Zimbabwe

This was the 50th hat-trick in the history of ODI cricket, while it was the third ODI hat-trick for Zimbabwe. Earlier in 1997, Zimbabwe’s Eddo Brands took a hat-trick against England. Then in 2104, Prosper Utseya repeated this feat against South Africa. Both these bowlers had also shown this by doing so in Harare. Whereas Medhevre also did this feat on the same ground. Not only this, Madhevere became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in a bilateral ODI series against an associate nation.

Talking about this match, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Zimbabwe team scored 271 runs in 49.2 overs on the basis of half-centuries from Sean Williams (77) and Clive Madande (52). In response, Max O’Dowd (81) and Tom Cooper (74) also scored half-centuries for the Netherlands, but the team could only manage 270 runs in the stipulated 50 overs and lost the match by 1 run. Earlier, the first match of the series was won by the Netherlands by three wickets. Now this series is on par with 1-1. The decider of the series will be played in Harare on March 25.
