Sean Williams has informed the Zimbabwe team management of his intention to withdraw from international cricket after the team’s current tour of Ireland, but is open to the possibility of playing white-ball cricket for the country in the future.
Williams, the Zimbabwe Test captain, is currently with the national team in Ireland but had earlier requested the selectors not to consider him for the five T20Is starting Friday in Ireland or the T20I in Scotland next month. But he is available for three ODIs against Ireland, which will come after the T20Is.
He has cited biobubble fatigue and uncertainty over his future as a cricketer as the main reasons for his decision. Sean Williams arrived in Ireland on Wednesday, six days after the rest of the team requested a mental-health break from the T20I series and informed the team management of his decision while in isolation.
Before his arrival, Zimbabwe Cricket had to announce a fifth captain for the tour since the start of 2020. Craig Ervine will lead the team in Ireland and Scotland in the last few series, followed by Chamu Chibhabha, Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza and Williams.
Sean Williams was not unhappy about not being given the leadership responsibility on this tour.
But he had many other catches with the way Zimbabwean cricket is run and his poor results. Under coach Lalchand Rajput, Zimbabwe have won only four ODIs in three years. All against the United Arab Emirates, and there is serious concern among senior players. That they will not qualify for the 2023 50-over World Cup. But has been the captain of the team in a regular capacity over 2020. His performances with the bat, in particular, have been remarkable since being given the reins of the Test team: three of his four Test centuries have come in four Tests as captain, including his best of 151* which was his last. Tests can happen, and he averages 96.20 in those games.
