When team India for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 was announced, everyone was surprised to see spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s name in the final fifty. As he had not played limited overs cricket for the country for a long time. Even in tournaments like IPL, his performance was nothing special. Despite this, R Ashwin was selected in India’s T20 World Cup squad and spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Who had been playing for a long time, were not given a place in the team.

Schwin played three matches in the T20 World Cup and two matches against New Zealand in Team India

However, R Ashwin played three matches in the T20 World Cup and two matches against New Zealand in Team India. He took at least one wicket each in all these matches. He took 9 wickets in these five matches. Due to this, he also returned to the ODI team and he was selected for the ODI series against South Africa. However, South African soil R Ashwin did not like it. Neither he was able to show amazing in the Test series nor in the ODI series.

After June 2017, R Ashwin, who came out to play the One Day International series in January 2022, could take only one wicket in two matches. In the three-match Test series played earlier, he could take only 3 wickets in 6 innings. After poor performance in South Africa, R Ashwin has been cut from not only ODI but also T20 International cricket team. The way he suddenly came into Team India, he has also been dropped suddenly.

Poor performance in South Africa

Looking at the history of Team India cricket, there is no doubt that now he may never be selected in the limited overs team. One reason behind this is his age, because he is currently more than 35 years old. The second reason is his performance, which has not been as good in limited overs cricket in recent times. Had he been selected in the T20 team as well, we would have assumed that his future lies in limited overs cricket, but it never happened.

R Ashwin’s name was not there on Wednesday night when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Announced the team selected by the selectors for the T20 and ODI series against West Indies. Even the BCCI did not give any explanation whether he has been dropped or rested. Because in the BCCI press release it is clearly written that the board has given rest to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami only.

If not Ashwin then who?

The BCCI has cleared R Ashwin’s address from limited overs cricket, so who has the option now. It has also been a glimpse. The BCCI has selected chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav for T20 and ODI cricket without any ifs. And buts along with Yuzvendra Chahal. Apart from this, young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has also got a place in India’s ODI and T20 team for the first time.

Apart from this, India also have a better option than R Ashwin in the form of Washington Sundar. Who is an off-spinner as well as can score runs at any order. In such a situation, the return of R Ashwin in T20 and One Day International cricket seems almost impossible. India also has another option for the spinner in the form of Axar Patel. Who has been selected in the T20 squad.
