Under 19 World Cup: England beat Bangladesh by seven wickets

Bastere, Jan 17 (PTI) England thrashed defending champions Bangladesh by seven wickets in a one-sided match of the Under-19 World Cup here today. Batting first, Bangladesh team got out for 97 runs. In reply, England achieved the target in 25.1 overs. Bangladesh’s nine wickets fell for 51 runs in the 25th over, but the number 11 batsman Ripon Mandal scored an unbeaten 33 to take the team close to a hundred. He shared an 11-run partnership with Naimur Rahman (11).

Batting first, Bangladesh team got out for 97 runs. In reply, England achieved the target in 25.1 overs.

Bangladesh’s nine wickets fell for 51 runs in the 25th over, but the number 11 batsman Ripon Mandal scored an unbeaten 33 to take the team close to a hundred. He shared an 11-run partnership with Naimur Rahman (11).

Left-arm pacer Joshua Boyden took four for 16 for England while right-arm pacer Thomas Aspinwall took two wickets.

They lost the wickets of opener George Thomas (15) and captain Tom Prest (four)

In reply, England lost opener George Thomas (15) and captain Tom Prest (four) but Jacob Bethel (44) and James Reu (26 not out) put on a 65-run partnership to lead the team to victory. Bethel was run out on the spot.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s decision to bat after winning the toss proved to be wrong. His wickets kept falling at regular intervals and in the 14th over the score was 26 for five.

In the fifth over, Mahfizul Islam lost his wicket, due to which Bangladesh did not get off to a good start. Only four of his batsmen could reach double digits. Mandal hit five fours and a six in his 41-ball knock.

England now have to play Canada on Tuesday while Bangladesh team will play UAE on Saturday.
