Under-19 World Cup: India in quarter-finals with a big win

Taruba (Trinidad), Jan 20 (PTI) Title contenders and record four-time champions India thrashed Ireland by 174 runs to enter the Super League quarter-finals of the Under-19 World Cup.

India started their campaign with a 45-run victory over South Africa on Saturday. And their big win over Ireland on Wednesday also assumes significance. As they could barely make it to the playing XI after six of the team’s players tested positive for COVID-19. Was able to land.

Left-handed batsmen Harnoor and Angkrish got India off to a great start with a 164-run partnership for the first wicket. Harnoor hit 12 fours while Angkrish hit 10 fours and two sixes.

Caretaker captain Nishant Sindhu (34) and Raj Bawa (42) put on 64 runs for the third wicket. Rajvardhan Hengargekar played a brilliant innings of 39 runs in 17 balls in the death overs to take India’s score past 300 runs.

Chasing a target of 308, Ireland stumbled initially. And lost both openers Liam Doherty (7) and David Vincent (eight) and number three Jack Dixon (nil) within the first seven overs. Due to which his score became 17 runs for three wickets.

Ireland did not recover from this till the end. Left-arm pacer Garv Sangwan (2 for 23) dismissed skipper Tim Tector (15) in the 15th over to reduce the score to 36 for four.

Wicketkeeper Joshua Cox (28) tried to improve the innings but Sangwan got him caught by wicketkeeper Dinesh Bana.

Scott Macbeth scored 32 runs but this only extended the wait for India’s victory. And reduced the margin of defeat somewhat. Left-arm spinner Anishwar Gautam (2 for 11) and off-spinner Kaushal Tambe (2 for 8) played a key role in dismissing middle-order and lower-order batsmen. Apart from them, Hengargekar, Ravi Kumar and Vicky Ostwal also took a wicket each.

India will play their last match in Group B against Uganda on Saturday

Apart from Dhul and Rashid, Aaradhya Yadav, Vasu Vats, Manav Parekh and Siddharth Yadav have also tested positive.
