Priyank Panchal, Shreyas Iyer, and Sarfaraz Khan have been included in the Ajinkya Rahane-led West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone in Coimbatore from Wednesday.

Panchal and Sarfaraz are joining the camp from Bengaluru, where they were part of the India A team that beat New Zealand A 1-0 in a series of three unofficial Tests. Prithvi Shaw and Rahul Tripathi have been called up to join the A team for the white-ball leg of the Chennai tour starting Thursday.

Iyer is back from a short break

Meanwhile, Iyer is making a comeback from a short break. He also missed the quarter-finals against Northeast in the United Arab Emirates as a reserve player with India’s Asia Cup squad.

India A’s red-ball captain Panchal finished the series with two half-centuries and a total of 201 runs in four innings. Sarfaraz, the highest run-scorer in the 2021-22 Ranji season, had a slightly lighter series, with 99 runs in three innings.

Next season may be important for Iyer

While he remains an incumbent in the Test team, his apparent struggle with the short ball has come under scrutiny. He too, in the last three months, has lagged behind the pecking order in India’s first XI in white-ball cricket.

Iyer’s most recent appearance for India was in the Caribbean in July-August, where he scored three half-centuries in three ODIs and one fifty in three T20I innings. Duleep is likely to join India’s World Cup-bound squad after the final.
