Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is battling a fresh injury with just weeks to go before the start of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Maxwell injured his ankle during training ahead of Australia’s T20I series against South Africa on Wednesday and will now go home with his wife as they await the birth of their first child.

While Maxwell is expected to recover from his ankle problem in time for Australia’s World Cup campaign.

National selector Tony Dodemide said no chances would be taken given the 34-year-old’s injury history, including a serious foot injury. Friend’s party at the end of last year.

Maxwell against India at the end of next month:-

Dodamide is confident that Maxwell will be back in national colors during Australia’s ODI series against India later next month and will be fully fit for the World Cup.

“We will monitor Glenn’s recovery so that he is available for the three-match ODI series in India before the World Cup,” Dodamide said.

Maxwell’s absence opens the door for Matthew Wade to return to Australia’s squad, with the veteran getting a call-up for the series against South Africa and could provide another wicketkeeping option alongside Josh Inglis.

Seven first-choice players now miss the T20I portion of Australia’s tour of South Africa, with Maxwell joining Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and David Warner.

Australia’s first match is against South Africa in Dublin on Wednesday.
