With this defeat, Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign has derailed and its knockout journey is over now it cannot get a place in the semi-finals by winning the remaining three matches.
The Controversy with Tamim affected the team:
Disappointed after the defeat to the Netherlands, Shakib said, “Maybe the dispute between me and Tamim may have affected the team. It is not uncommon. You don’t know what’s in a person’s mind but I don’t disagree with the fact that (the controversy) might have affected us.”
The experienced all-rounder said, “You can say that (this is Bangladesh’s worst World Cup campaign so far) and I will not say otherwise. We were very underprepared coming into this tournament but we can’t use that as an excuse,”
Tamim was left out of Bangladesh’s 15-man World Cup squad due to fitness problems. Shakib had a tussle with the selectors regarding team selection and had warned that half-fit Tamim Iqbal should not be selected in the World Cup team.
Shakib had given an ultimatum to the selectors not to select half-fit players in the World Cup team, otherwise, he would step down from the captaincy. The BCB selectors had no option but to accept Shakib’s demands.
Shakib has been a flop with the bat in this tournament and his highest score in 5 innings has been 40 runs and he has taken 7 wickets with his left-arm spin bowling.
We Performed Poorly With The Bat Throughout The Tournament:-
Analyzing Bangladesh’s performance in the 2023 World Cup match against the Netherlands, Shakib termed the poor performance of the batsmen as a major problem for his team throughout the campaign.
“We have been flopping with the bat throughout the tournament and it has been that bad. There is more cricket to come and we have to push ourselves and I know it is difficult but we have to try to finish the tournament on a high note. We struggled throughout the tournament, I don’t know what’s going on in the players’ minds.”
“I thought we bowled really well but we were weak in the fielding. “The situation we were in, we should have restricted them to 160-170.”
