South Africa’s Nortje and Magala out of World Cup due to injury

World Cup 2023: South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the upcoming 2023 World Cup to be held in India due to a back injury. The 29-year-old also missed the 2019 World Cup due to a broken thumb he suffered during a practice session. South Africa’s chances have been dealt another blow as Sisanda Magala will also miss the tournament due to a knee injury, according to RevSports.

Nortje has taken 36 wickets in 22 ODI matches at an average of 27.27

Nortje, one of South Africa’s key players, could only bowl five overs in the second ODI against Australia in Bloemfontein as he was troubled by back problems. He has proven to be vital to the South African team with his hit-the-deck skills and pace. Nortje has taken 36 wickets in 22 ODI matches at an average of 27.27.

Magala took 14 wickets in eight ODI matches at an excellent average of 25.4

Meanwhile, Magala has taken 14 wickets in eight ODIs at an impressive average of 25.4. Experienced all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo could be one of the replacements. This all-rounder has played 76 ODI matches, in which he has 89 wickets to his name. Lizaad Williams and Wayne Parnell could also come into the equation.

South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign with a match against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 7.
