New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will not play in the first match of the 2023 ODI World Cup against England. Williamson had to stay out of the team as he did not recover from knee surgery on time.

Williamson will play as a specialist batsman in the practice match against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Friday, while he will bat as well as bowl in his next practice match against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Stead Said We Will Not Put Any Pressure On Them:-

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said, “We have remained focused on Kane’s return. His recovery is going well and we will not put any pressure on him.”

Kane Williamson has returned from six months off after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and undergoing surgery in the opening match of IPL 2023.

Williamson decided not to play in the first match of the World Cup, while he will be seen in the practice matches.

Before coming to India, Kane Williamson had said, “I want to carry on with what I am doing now.” In such a situation, the New Zealand team has suffered a big blow due to the absence of Williamson in the first match.

In Williamson’s absence, Tom Latham will captain New Zealand in their World Cup opener against England in Ahmedabad on October 5.
