While Issie Wong will get a chance to represent her country in her home city – has been named in England’s T20 squad for the first time.
Head coach Lisa Keightley said: “We have picked our best T20 team. We have a look at how we take our T20 game forward.
But we believe this team gives us the best chance of success at the Commonwealth Games – and that’s something to be really excited about.”
“T20 cricket and women’s cricket, in general, is evolving all the time – and to put ourselves in a position to win global tournaments, we have to go ahead with it, be aggressive, be dynamic and be part of our selection. It’s about hugging.
Similarly, we have selected players who are flexible, adaptable, fit into multiple roles and give us the most options for individual match-ups.”
“It’s really exciting that we’ve got so much competition for places. Obviously, it’s tough for people who aren’t good to be picked on a team.
But we are not used to making tough decisions like these and they are part of the game and a sign of how far the game is progressing.”
The coach concluded, “We now have players from the home game raising their hands for selection, which is a testament to the regional play, and we have real strength in depth, and that’s very important.”
Captain Heather Knight said: “This is such a great opportunity for us and for the sport to compete in the Commonwealth Games, especially on home soil.”
“When you’re younger you watch these multi-sport events, but as a cricketer, you don’t imagine you’ll be out to represent Team England.
It gives us a great opportunity to introduce some youngsters to cricket who might not have played or seen that before.”
“It’s an extremely exciting team and the chance for us as a group to make history and become the first female cricketer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games is something that can really move us forward.”
The Commonwealth Games will be hosted at Edgbaston, with England’s first match against Sri Lanka on Saturday, 30 July.
England has named the same 15-strong squad for the T20I series against South Africa, which begins on Thursday, July 21 in Chelmsford.
